• Wildebeest migration in the Serengeti.
    Incredible Serengeti

    & Wildebeest Calving Safari.

February 2025 / 2026: Incredible Serengeti Safari

Incredible Serengeti Safari is our second small-group safari to Tanzania, concentrating on the world-famous Serengeti National Park, a World Heritage Site and one of Africa's most famous parks, and indeed, place that's hard to grow tired of! And while our November tour takes in the Serengeti as well, it's more limited in duration as that tour is more of an overview of Tanzania's classic 'Northern Circuit'.

This 'Serengeti traverse' starts in the far north, close to the border with Kenya and the famed Mara River; then moves on to the 'Western Corridor' and the Central Serengeti before the grand finale in the Ndutu area, where the vast herds of Wildebeest gather to calve on the fertile volcanic soils. From there participants can either fly back to Arusha or continue by road with our Ngorongoro Crater add-on.

Areas covered:

Our Incredible Serengeti & Wildebeest Calving Safari starts at Kilimanjaro International Airport. After a night to settle in the safari experience begins. We have two nights in the Kogatende area, followed by a night in the Western Corridor area. Moving on we explore the Seronera area in the Central Serengeti. The final highlight is three nights in Ndutu, where the Wildebeest herds pause to give birth on the short grass plains. The tour concludes with either a night in Arusha (at extra cost), or a drop off at the airport. This will depend on outbound flight times. There is also the option of an Ngorongoro Crater extension (highly recommended!).

Accommodation:

The accommodation is of a medium-plus standard. It includes a small hotel at the start and various safari lodges in the Serengeti. Importantly, all accommodations have en-suite facilities, and are clean and comfortable.

The mammals:

This safari is designed to offer a holistic natural history experience. Of course, the large mammals are a highlight, and we aim to see all of Africa's classic big game species, though Black Rhino is rare in the Serengeti. The area hosts good number of Cheetah and other big cats, and we'll hope to have multiple sightings of these exciting predators. Both Spotted and Striped Hyenas occur in the park, though the latter is quite rare. Other carnivores include Golden and Black-backed Jackals, Honey Badger, Serval, African Civet and so forth. Other species to see include Hippopotamus, Maasai Giraffe, a range of plains game such as Grant's and Thompson's Gazelles, Oribi, Bohor Reedbuck, African Buffalo, Defassa Waterbuck, Plains Zebra and of course Common Wildebeest, which are staggering in their numbers. Slender, Banded and Dwarf Mongooses are generally quite common, and then there are plenty of rarer creatures that require a big dose of luck in order to see, such as Aardvark, Ground Pangolin, Bushpig, Southern Tree Hyrax, Crested Porcupine and more.

The birding:

Although this is primarily a mammal tour, there will be plenty of birds to be seen as well. Savanna species are well represented. These include species such as: Common Ostrich, Grey-breasted Spurfowl, Jackson’s Widowbird, Von der Decken's Hornbill, Fischer’s Lovebird, Steel-blue and Straw-tailed Whydahs, Rufous-tailed Weaver, Rosy-throated Longclaw, Secretarybird, Rüppel’s Griffon, Yellow-throated Sandgrouse, White-bellied and Hartlaub's Bustards, Hildebrant’s Starling, Golden-winged Sunbird, Grey Crowned Crane, Southern Ground Hornbill, Black Coucal and many more.

In conclusion, this Incredible Serengeti Safari will offer a great overview of one of the world's most famous national parks.  Traversing the Serengeti from north to south will be the experience of a lifetime. And, while we expect the north and west to be quieter in terms of large mammals, it'll also be quieter in terms of other tourists, giving us the freedom to enjoy sightings in relative isolation. The south-eastern Serengeti and Ndutu however will be teeming with Wildebeest (and attendant predators) as they loiter on the short grass plains to give birth and allow the calves to build up strength before they start trekking westwards and northwards towards the Masai Mara, making for a spectacular grand finale to the safari (though those who book the Ngorongoro Crater add-on will still have something to look forward to!). Contact us for more info.
